It’s not often that Hawaii gets to have one of the best in the fitness industry do a workshop out here. Dr. Mark Cheng is an expert kettlebell instructor, and he’s doing a workshop at our gym here in Honolulu this weekend. Hopefully you’re a fan of Fitness Ranes on Facebook and you’ve been seeing the updates I’ve been posting. 😉
If you’ve ever done any digging around online about kettlebells, you’ve probably seen some of Dr. Cheng’s work. Dr. Cheng was a private student of Pavel Tsatsouline for years on a weekly basis, and earned his RKC certification directly from Tsatsouline himself. In case you didn’t already know, Pavel was the man that introduced North America to the kettlebell and what is commonly referred to as “Hardstyle” through the RKC organization first, and now through StrongFirst (SFG).
Doc would eventually be promoted to RKC Team Leader and Sr. RKC and later accept a position as Sr. SFG instructor. StrongFirst is the organization that Pavel created after he split with the RKC/Dragon Door organization.
If you own a copy of Gray Cook’s DVD “Kettlebells From the Ground Up”, you’ll probably recognize Doc’s name from the manual that came with it–he literally wrote the book! As a specialist in Chinese medicine orthopedics, “Doc” Cheng brings extensive medical knowledge to the table and knows the body in a way that most trainers, and strength coaches never will. I’ve personally followed Doc’s work since around 2008 when I was renting space out of a small, private gym as an independent trainer. This year, I finally had the honor of meeting Dr. Cheng in person.
This weekend, Dr. Cheng will be at Fitness Ranes sharing his expertise and dropping HOURS AND HOURS of knowledge bombs on those fortunate enough to be in attendance. It’s down to the wire, but you MIGHT be able to get in on this workshop at the last minute. Rather than tell you everything that Doc is going to be covering (it’s a LOT), head over to his website and check out the post where he covers what he will be presenting on Saturday June 7th & Sunday June 8th.
Some people might freak out at the cost–it’s not a cheap course. Great stuff isn’t cheap. However, compare it to the cost of paying for a flight to the mainland, a hotel, a rental car, food, and it’s a steal. I know this from experience as I frequently travel to the mainland to expand my fitness knowledge by attending workshops and conferences. These things just don’t happen in Hawaii very often. In fact, I can’t recall a time in my 10+ years of being a personal trainer that Hawaii has EVER had someone of this level come out here and put on a course as extensive as the one happening this weekend. The investment will absolutely be worth the return.
Now, I don’t get anything if you sign up. I really just feel it’s a moral obligation to tell you about it. For all the personal trainers out there in Honolulu, the strength coaches, fitness buffs, Crossfit coaches & enthusiasts, physical therapists, and anyone involved in “movement medicine”, you owe it to yourself and your clients to be there and learn from Dr. Cheng. See you at Fitness Ranes!
