Earlier this year in March, we travelled to Lanai to lead a week-long session of the Fitness Ranes Experience, a.k.a. our Team Training / Boot camp sessions. We introduced their community to the progressive functional strength & conditioning principles that we use at Fitness Ranes. They trained using equipment many have never seen before like battling ropes, kettlebells, and suspension trainers.
Unlike the insulated controlled environment of our indoor Honolulu training center, Lanai offered a unique outdoor blend of island breezes and fresh tropical air. We were definitely jealous! And when the weather eventually turned on us, we brought it indoors to their high-school gym – Cheee Huuu!
And on the weekend of their Pineapple Festival in July, some die-hards returned for more. The weather was on our side!
It seems like they caught the wave of fitness here. We are honored to return again to now train a team of interns to become coaches in fitness and athletic performance. Maybe it’s like the tale of teaching people to fish, rather than feeding them for a day (or two). We say kudos to Pulama Lanai for committing to this initiative which will serve both the community and its high-school athletes, namely the wrestling team led by Tommy Vierra and Aaron Fernandez.
Many of us who live on Oahu may not have taken an outerisland trip to the beautiful island of Lanai. This reminds me of another story of the shoemaker’s son: we get so wrapped up in ourselves that we forget about other important people around us.
We may have read about Pulama Lanai and the many exciting initiatives underway. The plans are grand, and the outlook ranges from enthusiasm to cautious optimism, and everything in-between. The successes already achieved, all that is currently unfolding, and the projects planned for the future will greatly impact this tight-knit community of about 3,000.
The realization of Pulama Lanai’s vision for a sustainable community greatly hinges on the people who live and work on the island. And to this extent, Fitness Ranes is proud to be a part of the initiative to impact the health and wellness of its residents.
By learning our ways of coaching, this will guide Pulama Lanai to the successes our own clients have achieved, whether they are competitive athletes, sedentary lifestylers, or those seeking a methodical approach to making positive health & fitness changes in their lives.
The team assembled for last week’s Internship training was a crew of seasoned athletes and community influencers. They invested both weekend and weeknights in our intensive train-the-trainer sessions, led by Chris Ranes, Head Coach at V1ctory Athletics & Fitness Ranes. They soaked up our training content, absorbed hours of theoretical materials, observed numerous demonstrations and participated in hands-on training which tested their own physical capabilities. Because of our condensed schedule, we worked through daylight and nighttime, sunshine, light showers, and even the crisp evening air!
The beauty of the land, the dedication of its people and the road that Pulama Lanai is about to travel is an exciting journey unfolding. We are proud to be aligned with this initiative, and look forward to making a difference in the lives of Lanai residents.
